課程概述

This is an introductory course intended for undergraduate and graduate students with knowledge of basic ecology. The focus will be on OCEANOGRAPHY, with investigation on interactive biological, chemical, and physical processes in the ocean. The purposes are to give an overview of biological ocean science (a wide rather than deep view) and to provide basic information and training for graduate research. The discussion will range from physical effects on the biology to biological effects on biogeochemical cycling; the spatial scale will range from individual organisms (e.g. viscosity and turbulences on plankton feeding and nutrient uptake) to ecosystem (e.g. remote sensing and circulation modeling); the organism will range from virus to whales.

課程目標
Students will gain knowledge of biological oceanography

Oral presentation: A list of research topics named “Marine Ecology in the Cutting Edge” will be provided. Biological oceanography is a multidisciplinary science, and we need to learn what other fields can help us to understand our ocean. For example, how engineer help design sampling devices that are useful in collecting biological data. Each student is required to pick a topic from the list and give a presentation on that topic. Suitable references will be provided. See the list below. Marine Ecology in the cutting edge: -History and Anthropology: shifting baseline syndrome and using historical data -Geology: sediment records and paleo-ecology -Engineering: sampling devices (optical and acoustic) -Computer science: pattern recognition and neural network -Math: statistics and complex system, niche theory, competition, neutral theory -Physics: bio-physical interaction, dispersal, spatial pattern -Mechanics: viscosity and life in low Reynolds number -Climate: climate change and human disturbance -Economy: quota-trading system -Finance: fisheries markets, option and derivatives as a means for global management -Fisheries: problems and approaches in fisheries assessment and management -Management: ecosystem approach to fisheries management -Public health: algal bloom and pollution in the oceans -Conservation: design of marine reserves -Behavior: evolution and self-organized behavior of schooling; fitness and migration behavior -Biogeography: ocean circulation and distribution of organisms -Evolution: speciation and cryptic species; morphology and adaptation -Remote sensing: water color, fish school size -Chemistry: nutrient cycling and stoichiometry -Biochemistry: tracers in otolith -BioGeochemistry: iron fertilization, carbon cycle -Molecular biology: photosynthesis and enzyme activity in measuring biological processes -Genetics: metagenomics and proteomics, environmental shotgun -Microbiology: bacteria and virus, microbial loop -Medical: marine nature products -Communication: journalism
